Dr. Shen from University of IL has developed an electrochemical method to directly detect neurotransmitters gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and glutamate without modification. In the detection, neurotransmitters are protonated thereby forming complexes with ionophores. This method is convenient and is able to monitor dynamic information of neurotransmitters. This method is compatible with both large instruments and benchtop unit.
Dr. Hergenrother from the University of IL has synthesized 29 compounds derived from natural product pleuromutilin. Ferroptocide from the collection was identified as a ferroptosis inducer. Unlike commonly used inducers, ferroptocide induces ferroptosis in a novel mechanism. It is not only a powerful research tool toward better understanding of Ferroptosis mechanism, but also potential drug for cancer treatment.
