PerioSim™: a 2D and 3D Virtual Reality Dental Training CD for Teaching, Training and Testing Trainees Periodontal Probing Procedures
Dental training involving patients is not practical for the novice student. The advent of virtual reality based techniques opens up new avenues in medical education. Virtual reality (VR) based training methods are highly cost effective, can be carried out a number of times and have the additional benefits of being able to record and evaluate performance with real-time feedback. With over 8000 students needing training annually in the US alone there is a need for an educational aid that addresses these goals. The present UIC invention makes use of Virtual Reality to tackle an aspect of dental training.
Description/Details
This UIC invention is a CD-based self-contained teaching and learning tool covering basic scientific principles for periodontal probing procedure. Basic scientific principles for periodontal probing procedure are described; both scientific theory and all necessary instrumentation are presented in both 2D and 3D. It includes a 3-D Virtual Reality (VR) environment that provides students with a tool to practice and hone their skills. Students thus can learn, practice procedures and be self-tested.
Applications
Any type of procedural dental training where 3D, VR learning would be of assistance
Benefits
- Cost effective to produce
- Allows for unlimited practice time
- Capable of testing and evaluating the student's efficacy in leaning the procedure
- Helps standardize the mm reading of pocket depth in a 3D, VR environment
