Efficient Agricultural Monitoring With Unmanned Aerial Vehicles



Dr. Chowdhary has developed a system for monitoring agricultural fields using low-cost unmanned aerial vehicles and an Android/iOS device.  A UAV will acquire images of an entire field, identify anomalous areas, and autonomously plan and execute a lower altitude flight to obtain close-up images of areas of interest.  Operators then provide feedback on what the system has identified as areas of interest.  This feedback is used to improve the system’s ability to acquire and present high-value images to the user. 

Unlike currently available technology, this system allows for in-situ data processing, eliminating the need for large data uploads which can be problematic in rural areas with limited data networks.
