A novel cardiac specific blood biomarker for diastolic heart failure
A novel method and medical device for detecting auditory problems.
Our ability to follow verbal instructions is dependent on the proper functioning of the middle ear muscles. This is more difficult as the acoustical features in our modern environment becomes more complex and noisy. Currently, middle ear muscle function is monitored through clinical tympanometry and acoustic reflex (AR) testing. These clinical tools are sensitive to severe damage in the neural regulation of the muscles and growth deformations of the bone structure.
Novel formulation of Decitabine with increased efficacy for treating cancer and blood disorders
A virostatic ZnO particle for preventing topic spread of Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1)
There is no cure for herpes and current medications only treat the symptoms of the virus. UIC inventors have developed ZnO based micro‐nano particles that multivalently bind to HSV-1, rendering them un-infectable.
Pan-specific, selective antibody for Amyloid Beta (Aß) protein
Aß is found in high levels in pathological conditions such as dementia, vascular diseases, and traumatic brain injury. Currently, there is no antibody that is specific for Aß that does not bind to its precursor protein APP. The most widely used antibody today is 6E10. This antibody is priced at $905 for a half milliliter. The UIC inventors have developed an antibody that only binds to Aß and is pan specific in which it detects all forms of Aß (unaggregated, oligomeric and fibrillar forms).
Mobile Application for Calculating Digoxin Dosage
This application is designed to allow healthcare providers to calculate an appropriate, individualized dose for digoxin for their patients using simple, easily retrievable clinical and demographic characteristics. The application will do so for both a bolus, or loading dose, as well as a maintenance dose. Additionally, the digoxin dose may be individualized by indication (atrial fibrillation or flutter, heart failure, or both) and desired digoxin concentration.
Drug Discovery of Enoyl-Reductase (FabI) Inhibitors against F. Tularensis and Bacilllus anthracis in a Computational Approach
Although Tularemia and Anthrax are rare according to the records in US, the diseases themselves are highly incapacitating to infected persons and have been used as biological weapons in the past. For the national security, the development of their specific antibiotics is particularly necessary. Scientists in Center for Pharmaceutical Biotechnology have found a lead compound based on a computational high-throughput screening targeting Francisella tularensis FabI.
Time-Efficient Phase Error Correction in EPI-PROPELLER
Periodically Rotated Overlapping ParallEL Lines with Enhanced Reconstruction (PROPELLER) MRI is a widely used method to correct for patient motion. Although echo planar imaging (EPI) based PROPELLER is a more robust technique compared to fast spin echo (FSE) based PROPELLER, EPI-PROPELLER suffers from Nyquist ghosts which necessitates phase correction.
Conductive, hydrophobic Nanofiber coating for smart textiles
E-fabrics are fabrics that incorporate electronics and circuitry into natural and synthetic fibers. E-fabrics need to maintain conductivity while being stretched and subjected to the same wear normal fabric would experience. The UIC inventors have created a nitrile rubber matrix with nanofiber fillers (metallic or nonmetallic) formulated for spray application to surfaces. This spray can create elastic, conductive coatings or printed circuits. The invention is specifically formulated to be applied to synthetic fibers, such as polyester, without loss of adhesi
A Series of 5-methylthiazole Analogs derived from Clomethiazole for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease
Clomethiazole (CMZ) is a sedative/ hypnotic, anticonvulsant, currently in clinical use for anxiety in the elderly via its GABA-mimetic and anti-inflammatory actions. Besides acting as a GABAA potentiator, CMZ was also proposed to inhibit the p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase pathway and decrease inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in cortical glial cells.
