Membrane lipids control diverse cellular processes, including cell proliferation, metabolism and apoptosis.  Perturbation of the complex signaling networks formed by lipids and their targets can contribute to diseases, like cancer, diabetes and inflammation.  Determination of lipid spatiotemporal fluctuation and dynamics is a key step towards greater understanding of lipid-mediated processes.  Unfortunately, current methods are neither quantitative nor highly specific.
The proteasome is a protein complex that targets ubiquitin-tagged proteins for degradation in an ATP-dependent manner. Recent advances in the understanding of the mechanisms of proteasome activity led to the development of proteasome inhibitors as effective drugs against human cancer. However the precise mechanisms of the anticancer activity of proteasome inhibitors were not well understood.
Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) can be manipulated to facilitate organ repair and regeneration and manipulate the individual’s immune system. Their ability to accomplish both of these tasks is dependent on their state of activation. The UIC inventors have discovered a new method to activate these stem cells and transform them so that they can provide more effective regeneration as well as more effective control of damaging immune system processes.
University inventors have suggested a novel method to delay or reverse the aging process of cells and delay age-related diseases by using repeated electromagnetic fields shock (REMFS).  The scientists have also identified the cellular mechanism by which this technique works.

Currently Gαs proteins are labeled with green fluorescent protein (GFP) at either the C- or N-t
Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) have the unique ability to undergo self-renewal and to differentiate into cells belonging to multiple hematopoietic lineages. The ability of stem cells to self renew allows them to maintain hematopoiesis throughout the life span of an organism. The knowledge of the behavior of HSCs is limited due to their rarity, difficulty of efficient isolation, and sensitivity to manipulation.
