University of Illinois start-up helps those with middle ear infections

You are here

UI start-up PhotoniCare is developing a handheld imaging tool that will enable physicians to quickly and accurately diagnose middle ear infections during routine examinations.  The company's device sees through the eardrum, allowing direct visualization of the middle ear without surgery.  PhotoniCare, which is located in the University's EnterpriseWorks incubator, has received more than $2M in non-dilutive funding from the National Institutes of Health, Food and Drug Administration, and other institutions, including a Phase II SBIR from the NIH to conduct clinical trials of its ClearView device at Children's National Health System in Washington, DC.

With the help of the Association of University Technology Managers (AUTM) we've produced this video showing how the technology is having an impact.

University of Illinois resources that helped enable this technology transfer include Illinois Proof-of-Concept fundingNSF I-Corps at Illinois, and I-Start Professional Service Assistance.
